The 1970's generation is usually considered a specific promotion of the 1960's generation (referred to as "promoția șaptezecistă"). Critic Laurențiu Ulici was probably the first to talk about it and is the one usually associated with the use of this term, which was often criticised afterwards. Until today, some consider that there are few distinctions between the last wave of the 1960's generation and this promotion; there are even voices that regarded the practice of splitting Romanian literature in generations at every 10 years as ridiculous (as if to simulate the "cincinal" economic plans of the Communist regime). However, there was indeed a literary climate that differed substantially from that in which the likes of Nichita Stănescu were launched. This transitional wave is often seen as the "swansong" of neomodernism, turned self-referential and mannerist. It is seen by others as a "conservative" period compared to the previous one, due to the style of echinoxists (who were one of the most appreciated groups of the period) and the partial revival of socialist realism after 1971 (see July thesis).
